Cascade Brewers Society Newsletter April 2001
What’s New:
First thing: Many thanks to Chris Studach for hosting the last meeting. Chris had just gotten back in from out of town, and still did a great job on the tech meeting. We talked about using strange ingredients in beer. That is a subject that I’m sure will come up again.
Next meeting will be at Kent and Janie’s house in Veneta. We will be talking about using the Pro Mash software. This is by far the best brewing program I have ever seen. It is used by home brewers and pros alike. Kent has been using it for years and is willing to share his experience. I’m sure some of us will also have some things to add. There isn’t much you can’t do with this program.
Have your beer ready for Charlie Papazian on April 2nd at the
Wild Duck. This is coming together very nicely. We will have
people coming from Corvallis to Cottage Grove. There will be live
music, and good munchies. There will be all kinds of cool prizes
for the raffle. Continued on back- - -
Charlie’s Coming
Unless you’ve been under a rock for the last couple of months you already know that Charles Papazian is coming to Eugene on Monday April 2nd 6pm at the Wild Duck. Invite all your brew buddies for this one. It’s not often we have the Godfather of Homebrewing in town to talk and quaff a few cold ones with us. Be there or be a BUD drinker!!!
Controversy Brewing:
“Baptize your taste buds”
That’s the theme of a new advertisement campaign for a Salt Lake City
brew, Wasatch Beer. But the ads are leaving some residents in the
home of the Mormon church with a bitter taste. In one radio spot,
missionaries are trying to spread the word about good beer. “The
campaign really isn’t intended to give offense to the prevailing culture,”
Wasatch Brewing managing partner Greg Schirf said. “We just want
to sell beer and have fun doing it.”
What’s New cont’
If you have something cool you would like to bring and show, talk to me or Janie. We want good photos to put up on display, so we would like them before the event. We can also use a few more people to help with pouring beer. If you know someone who is pouring at the Beer Festival and wants to do this event, that would be great. We can bring kegs or bottles. If you bring kegs try to bring something to dispense from. We will have CO2 but bring your own bottle if you can. We want to make this as easy for the servers as possible.
We will have new t-shirts at the Charlie Papazian event. No long-sleeve shirts yet. We need to sell off some of these before the club can afford long-sleeve shirts. The new color will be gray. It looks great with the logo. Thank you to the people who pre-paid so we could afford to do this.
Last Monday of every month, Beer Geek Night @ Sam Bonds! If we
want this to keep
going we need to check this out.

Other Things Brewing:
I just so happened on the greatest thing to “homebrew/roast” since my last batch of Coffee kiln Porter-Coffee! Yes coffee. In that I mean home roasting of the beans. If you really like good coffee, not the stuff in a can but freshly ground fine beans then you should try roasting your own. The latest William’s Brewing catalog includes a new home coffee bean roasting kit. I had to try it and I’m telling you the coffee I make with the freshly roasted beans if awesome. It’s essentially a glorified hot air popcorn maker and only takes about 5 mins to roast enough beans to make about a large pot. The green beans are about half the price of gourmet roasted beans. I’ll bring some to Kent and Janie’s for you Java freaks to try.
