Labor Day Weekend – HOP MADNESS LIVES! Here’s the scoop: This year''s event will be held at Ryan LeCompte's (an OBC member) Brook's Tree Farm outside of Salem and very close to last year's site (we are persona non grate at Willamette Mission State Park after last year's

problems). Ryan has about 2 acres of nice , well cut grass field where we can camp. We will be short on shade but won't have park rangers cruising the grounds either.

web site for maps, etc.  www.hopmadness.com.

And Now a Word from President Robin Chitwood:

July 29, 2004

The mercury topped 103 degrees at the Oregon Brewers Festival in Portland last weekend. Under the tents it was even warmer. The crowd was smaller than last year due to the heat. As beer pitchers warmed up quickly in the sun, wily drinkers watched for fresh full pitchers of  cold brew before tasting. Servers were very careful not to over pour this year and a seven-ounce taste required two one-dollar tokens. That’s 40% more than before but twice the cost. They blamed it on OLCC but what’s a few bucks when you’re surrounded by great beer on a blistering hot afternoon. East coast breweries had a better representation this year with some very good lagers and wheat beers. Our home state made up about 30% of the total with those good old Oregon hoppy ales. Rogue Ales featured a rye IPA they called “Gone Awry”, the recipe contributed by Denny Conn. Oregon Trail Brewery poured their “Smoke Signal” a rauch smoked ale developed by Ron Hulka. There was watermelon beer, mango beer and jasmine IPA but my vote for the wildest specialty beer was Widmer Brothers’ “Muscat Love”.

Even though the lawnmower sat idle in Chris and Edie’s front yard a couple of weeks ago, we had the right beer for the job. Thanks Chris and Edie for a great lawnmower beer night!

It’s almost time for some fun in the forest. Our August campout will offer games, hiking, fishing and swimming. The campground opens at 2pm on Friday 8/13. There will be a potluck dinner on Friday so bring a dish to share. The agenda for Saturday includes a barbeque, the coronation of the new Hop King and Queen, a big raffle and the “Un-Talent Show” Saturday night. There is potable water at the campground, otherwise bring everything you need for your one or two night stay. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on leads according to campground rules. Directions: The campground is 12 miles northeast of Lowell. From Lowell Service Center, turn left on North Shore Drive. After one block, turn right on Jasper-Lowell Road to Unity Road. Travel north on Unity Road to the covered bridge. At the crossroads in front of the Unity Covered Bridge, turn right onto road 6240. Veer left at the “Y” and continue east after it becomes Forest Service road 18. Proceed on FS road 18 to Clark Creek Organizational Camp.

Karen and I are hosting the smoked beer-judging event at our place, 2656 Potter, at 6pm on Saturday August 21st. Bring a bottled, smoked homebrew if you have one. Otherwise bring beer and munchies and watch the event. Nate Sampson will give a talk on culturing yeast from slants.

September is usually a very busy month for most of us. If you want to host an event in September, now’s the time to bring it up. There is a date change for the meeting at John and Kelly Wilson’s due to a conflict with Hop Madness on Sept. 4th & 5th. The IPA brew session at John and Kelley’s has been moved to Saturday, September 11 at 9am. The address is 1960 Washington St.  There might possibly be a club garage sale in September, time permitting. Club members will be notified as soon as more info is available. See you at the campout! Cheers, RC.

News You Can Use Department:

Our own Denny Conn supplied the recipe as inspiration for the Rogue 15th OBF Anniversary Beer called Gone Awry. Way to go Denny! Here’s what Rogue had to say on their website:

GONE AWRY
=========
”John Maier brewed yet another unique beer for the Oregon Brewers Festival, a Rye Pale Ale dubbed Gone Awry IPA. Brewed with Rye, 2 row Pale, Carawheat and Carafoam Malts; Centennial-type (a new Hop Union hop variety: 70% Cascade and 30% Columbus), Mt Hood, Horizon and Amarillo hops; Gone Awry measures in at 17 degrees Plato, 72 IBU, 7.5 percent ABV, and 82 percent Apparent Attenuation. Its pale color belies the in-your-face bracing hoppiness and long lasting finish of our 15th Oregon Brewers' Festival Beer. A tongue-tingling experience. Kudos also go to Denny Conn, the homebrewer who's Rye IPA recipe impressed and influenced John into commercially brewing a batch, albeit with some Rogue adjustments.”
