Hey all,
It’s almost
time for some fun in the forest. Our August campout will offer games, hiking,
fishing and swimming. The campground opens at 2pm on Friday 8/12. There will be
a potluck dinner on Friday so bring a dish to share. The agenda for Saturday
includes a barbeque; so bring a side dish to share for this as well. The
coronation of the Hop King and Queen, a big raffle and the “Un-Talent Show”
will take place Saturday night. There is potable water at the campground,
otherwise bring everything you need for your one or two night stay.
If you are
bringing beer, and I hope you do, bring a ice chest and ice to keep it cold,
and also CO2. We wouldn’t want to run out of gas and not be able to get to our
beer. Obviously, the CO2 part does not apply to bottled and canned brews.
Directions:
The campground is 12 miles northeast of Lowell. Turn left onto North Shore
Drive. After one block, turn right on Jasper-Lowell Road to Unity Road. Travel
north on Unity Road to the covered bridge. At the crossroads in front of the
Unity Covered Bridge, turn right onto road 6240. Veer left at the “Y” and
continue east after it becomes Forest Service road 18. Proceed on FS road 18 to
Clark Creek Organizational Camp.
A big snaggle toothed thanks goes out to Chris and Edie for
hosting a very successful lawnmower beer night with the whole “white trash”
theme. The big winner of the night went to Russ and about three inches of crack
for all to enjoy. Maybe enjoy isn’t the best term to use in that situation, but
you get the picture. Also, Kelly Curry picked up the best WT costume.
Another event for August is the Lane County Fair which in
turn brings the homebrew
competition. If you are interested in judging for this event contact Denny
Conn. It will be held Sun. 14 at the Lane County Fairgrounds at 9 AM.
Don’t
forget on August 27th Hop Madness will be in full swing. checkout

Here’s a message from Russ “Crack
Master” Kazmierczak:
Get ready
to put on your Leder Hosen, it's Oktoberfest time at the Kazmierczak's on
September 24th at 5:00 PM. Of course, the beer theme of the night is
Oktoberfest Style or any fall fest type of beer and the food will be German
potluck. Some German sausages will provided. So, if you have not brewed a beer for
the event yet, it's not too late to kick one out and if you can not lager at
this time of year use a clean yeast (Kolsch or lager yeast a warmer temps) or
just do a northwest style fall fest beer, which means using newly harvested
hops. Ahfeeterstained or how ever you spell the German word that means goodbye-
Kaz
One more thing to start thinking about is the
proposed “Garage Crawl.” This would happen sometime around November and we
would have Kevin H. drive us around in the party bus to host garages to indulge
in the vast array of homebrews whipped up by our own outstanding brewers. We
will need an idea of who would be interested in hosting a stop in their garage
for about an hour. Of course you will need to have a few beers on as well.
This edition of “What I Thought of That” is from Rod
Surcamp on a visit to a few Northern California breweries.
I recently visited Sonoma valley area and had the pleasure
to visit several breweries as well as several wineries. The breweries included
Moylan's Novato, Bear Republic Healdsburg, Silverado Napa Valley and Russian
River Santa Rosa. Being a Belgian Beer fan I very much enjoyed Russian River,
the brewery offered 6 or 8 British or American beer styles. A .popular beer
that I tried and enjoyed was Pliny the Elder a Northwest style IPA. On the
Belgian side of the list I tried all they had to offer. The list and
descriptions are as follows.
1.Supplication 7.00% Brown ale aged and second ferment in used french oak Pinot
Noir wine barrels with sour cherries, Brettanomyces, lactobacillus and
pediococcus yeasts for 12 months. 2. Temptation 7.25% Blonde Ale barrel aged in
used french oak Chardonnay barrels 12 months with Brettanomyces refermented in
the bottle
3.Sanctification 6.25% Blonde ale fermented with 100%Brettanomyces refermented
in the bottle. 4.Damnation 7.00% Golden ale refermented in the bottle 5.Saison
6.Beer De Sonoma 7.Little White Lies a Belgian Wit style
8.Perdition 9.Depuration All the beers were very good, the food was good, and
they had a very pleasant multi style band from San Diego. If you get near the
Santa Rosa area it is worth a stop. You can check them out

Here is a
news worthy item sent in by Denny Conn.
A Only a
Texan could think of this .... from the county where drunk driving is
considered a sport, comes this true story:
Recently, a routine police patrol parked outside a bar in Bandera,
Texas.
After last call the officer noticed a man leaving the bar so
intoxicated that he could barely walk. The man stumbled around the
parking lot for a few minutes, with the officer quietly observing. After
what seemed an eternity and trying his keys on five different vehicles, the man
managed to find his car which he fell into.
He sat there for a few minutes as a number of other patrons left
the bar and drove off. Finally he started the car, switched the
wipers on and off (it was a fine, dry summer night) -- flicked the
blinkers on, then off a couple of times, honked the horn and then switched on the lights. He
moved the vehicle forward a few inches, reversed a little and then
remained still for a few more minutes as some more of the other
patron vehicles left.
At last, the parking lot empty, he
pulled out of the parking lot and started to drive slowly down the road.
The police officer, having
patiently waited all this time, now started up the patrol car, put on
the flashing lights, and promptly pulled the man over and carried out a
Breathalyzer test. To his amazement the Breathalyzer indicated no
evidence of the man having consumed any alcohol at all! Dumbfounded, the
officer said, "I'll have to ask you to accompany me to the police
station. “This Breathalyzer equipment must be broken." "I doubt it," said the truly
proud Texan. "Tonight I'm the designated decoy."
And Now a Word from President Robin Chitwood:
July 27,
2005
This month marked the opening of “The Bier Stein” which I believe will be one of the best drinking
establishments in Eugene. For quality and selection it is unequalled. Owners
Chip and Kristina Hardy are experts about the beers they sell and Chip, a
former brewer at West Brothers has learned beer from the ground up. With 590
quality bottled beers and ten beers on tap you’ll feel like a kid in a candy
store. Reasonable prices on both imported and domestic bottled beers and no
corking fee leave your options wide open for sampling beers. The place has a
low-key, friendly atmosphere and already looks comfortable and lived-in. And
the kitchen serves professionally prepared tasty fare from a very well chosen
menu. Congratulations Chip and Kristina for launching a very well planned
business. Just get the electricity fixed. As busy as you are, I know those tripping
breakers are a hassle.
Every once in a while I start to wonder what’s going on with
brewing in the rest of the world. Well, here are some brewers you probably
never heard of making some geek beer from a speedy bean you probably never
heard of either. A group of students at IT University in Copenhagen, Denmark,
in collaboration with Superflex, have created the Free Beer project. They
describe it as an “open source beer project”. An open source project is where
people share information for free, reserving only the right to be recognized
for the idea. National Public Radio recently interviewed them and their first
beer, called “Vores Ol” (Our Beer) is made with pilsner malt and
guarana beans. Guarana beans contain caffeine and can be found in health food
stores. They say the mild stimulant effect counteracts the drowsiness
associated with beer. You can find their recipe and more info about the
experimental Free Beer Project on their
website at www.voresoel.dk .
I’d like to mention once again
that Hop Madness is happening this month, August 27th & 28th. This is a
camping and brewing event open to all homebrew clubs. Brew with fresh hops,
tour a hop processing plant and share homebrews with brewers from around the valley.
For more info check out their website at www.hopmadness.com
or talk to Matt Jarvis. Our club is sponsoring the event this year and we’d
really like to see a lot of CBS members there.
Cheers, RC
