The Prez Sez’:

Summer arrived and the beer flowed at Robin and Karen’s house at the last Club meeting. They’ve done an awesome job rebuilding the patio in their back yard; it felt like we were in a European café.  Lots of new faces came to the meeting to hear Chip talk about cleaning and sanitation. We went over some great stuff. We will work on putting together a list of tips explaining what works best for what situation. Willamette Homebrew donated some packages of PBW for people to try.  (I have been using it for the last six months or so, and I love it.  I’m so glad I don’t have to use caustic anymore.)

Congrats to Denny Conn for winning third place with his German Alt in the Heart of the Valley Homebrew contest.  If anyone else placed, please let me know.

Speaking of competition, you should be brewing now for the County Fair.  Any questions about that, talk to Jim at Home Fermentor.

Next meeting is the annual BBQ!  Wahooo!  To hell with the County Fair, brew for the BBQ!  (Just kidding—go ahead and brew for the County Fair.)  We worked out most of the details at the last planning meeting and Janie typed up a skit explaining the happenings.

The summer BBQ will be held at Julius’ house on July 21.  It will be a good ol’ southern bar-b-que complete with a sauce contest.  We will have a piñata, bubbles, sparklers and games for the cont’ on back

 From the Brew Pot:

This recipe comes from the “Old British Beers and How to Make Them” book by the Durden Park Beer Club.  This slim little book is quite neat with a bit of history and recipes dating back to the 1300’s.  This one is for Simond’s Reading Bitter ca. 1800.

For a 5 gallon batch:

Mash @ 154 degrees F the following for 1 hr.

12 # Pale Ale malt

1# Carapils

1# Amber Malt

Add 4 ounces of either Fuggles or Goldings hops for the boil and 1 oz  with 15mins to go in the boil for aroma.  Cool and pitch with a British style ale yeast.  The high gravity of this beer dictates a long maturation period.
