The Prez Sez:

Ahh yes, Steve knows how to put on a spread.  The Cinco De Mayo party was great.  Lots of great food and good beer.  There were so many dishes of food on the counter you couldn’t see the top.  Other people brought lots of food to round things out—too much to mention.  Chuck Link made an appearance for a while.  Seems to be doing well under the conditions.  Great to see him getting around.

Next event is at Robin Chitwood’s house.  Robin will be hosting a pot luck and tech meeting.  We will be talking about cleaning and sanitation before things get going.  There are some new chemicals out there we can talk about. Bring your favorite dish.  Your prez will be a bit late to the meeting because I will be working that day.

Yes, this newsletter is a little late.  It’s the time of year when things get kind of crazy for me at work.  Still brewin’ though!  We will still send the newsletter out via e-mail, but we will also send out all the newsletters via snail mail for a con’t on back.

From the Brewpot:

This time of year it’s nice to start thinking about the hot days of summer.  Hopefully we’ll get nice weather come July and August and it might be too hot to brew. So now is the time to get some lawn mower beers or as I call them Mass Consumption Ales (MCAs) into bottles or kegs for quaffing later this summer.  This brew is the most frequently brewed beer at my place. One of the nice things about this beer is that you can use up that half pound to pound of odd grain you’ve got left over from a previous batch.  I hope you’ll try it.

All grain Recipe for 5 gallons:

7# 2-row or pale ale malt

1# your choice light crystal malt

up to 1# left over malt

Mash at 154 degrees F for 45 mins

Sparge with enough 175 deg water to collect 5+ gallons.

Now for hopping; If you’re a hop head like me go for it.  Otherwise about ½ oz of Chinook or Nugget or a common bittering hop.  Again with the flavoring or aroma you’re on your own.  I like about 1oz of Cascade or Tett at 20min followed by 1oz of Kent Goldings or Hallertaur just before cooling.  Any yeast you like will work.  Remember Relax and have a home brew.

The Beer Bitch:

This column is for the guys.  In case you need to be reminded, summer is less than a month away. Okay, it’s here if you start at Memorial Day .  You know what summer means?  No. I’m not talking about sitting the hammock, sipping a beer and supervising; your kid while he mows the lawn and your wife washes the windows.

I’m taking about the fact that summer is shorts and tee shirt season. That’s right. Shorts. Tee shirts. No more heavy down parka for you.  People will be seeing your body.

Maybe this doesn’t bother you; maybe you think that roll around the middle looks just fine.  Okay I’m glad you don’t have self esteem issues. But the rest of us have to look at you so be kind to our eyes.  This is what good citizenship is all about.

Now is the time to get in shape.  The Beer Bitch will be happy to assist. Does the phrase “whip into shape’ resonate?  So get off that big butt of yours and get moving. It wouldn’t hurt if you walked the dog or washed some windows just something to burn off some calories.

However, the Beer Bitch is not entirely without compassion. She suggests that when you’re done with your training session you cool off with a nice homebrew. One or two, no more six packs for you.  After all beer is really good for you in moderation.  If you don’t believe me talk to me The Beer Bitch and I’ll set them right.  beerbitch@brewingnews.com.
