Glen, My Friend

By Scott Weech

Glen was my friend, and we all grieve his tragic and untimely loss.
I met Glen shortly after he came to town in 1988.  None of you would recognize him, as he was a tall, thin, clean cut, short haired, clean shaven corporate looking guy.  Someone referred him to me, and he made an appointment to go look at houses.  As we were driving around I started to ask him questions to get to know him.  Glen was doing asbestos abatement then, and explianed he had to be cleanshaven to wear the gasmask.
Glen told of his childhood, being raised in exotic locales around the world, of his parents, education, languages he spoke, and his scuba experiences.  I was impressed, and decided we would be friends.  I told him about Eugene, and mentioned that I was in a brewing club.  He said he had homebrewed before, so I invited him to a meeting.  Overtime his brewing skills improved and  he won a couple contests.
Eventually Glen became interested in brewing professionally.  We wrote him a letter of recommendation, and he got hired at Steelhead.  Things went well until he contaminated a tank with something.  Glen then hooked up with John Maier, and the rest is history.
Some things I'll always admire about Glen:
1)  He never forgot his roots.  Some brewers let the fame and
beer groupies go to their heads,  not Glen.
2)  He always gave credit to his mentor, John.
3)  He always supported the club (see #1).
4)  His bizarre sense of humor.  He was always ready to party, and put on a ridiculous hat.  Who can forget the metamorphic costume changes on halloween? or forest pump, or
southern gentleman?
5) He made good beer, and loved his work.

Glen went before his time, life is not fair. we'll always remember him.

Yeast Dregs

>From the Real Beer Page

Three guys in a bar; a Texan, a Californian, and a Seattlite. They drink, They get crazy. The Texan grabs a bottle of Tequila, unscrews the top, takes a good swig, and throws the bottle into the air. He then pulls out a .45 caliber pistol and shoots the bottle, spraying Tequila all over everything.

The other patrons at the bar shout "Hey, why'd you waste that?!" The Texan says, "Heck, it's just Tequila, where I come from, we got lotsa Tequila."

The Californian whips out a corkscrew and opens a bottle of wine, pours some into a glass, swirls the glass, and sips it, then throws the bottle in the air, and shoots it with a little silver pistol.

The patrons again express their displeasure and astonishment at such a waste of a bottle of wine. The Californian says, "Napa Valley, we got lots of great wine down there."

The Seattlite borrows the opener, pops the top off a bottle of Pyramid and downs the whole bottle. He throws the empty bottle into the air, shoots the Californian and simultaneously catches the falling bottle. Now the people are screaming, "Why'd you do that?!" The Seattlite replies, "We got lots of Californians, but I got to recycle this bottle."

One More

A man ordered four expensive 30-year-old single malts and had the bartender line them up in front of him. Then, without pausing, he downed each one. "Whew," the barkeep remarked, "you seem to be in a hurry."
The man replied, "You would be too, if you had what I have." "What do you have?" the bartender sympathetically asked. The man says, "Fifty cents."
