And Now a Word from President Robin Chitwood:
Wednesday, May 26, 2004
Corvallis
fairgrounds was recently the epicenter of brewing enthusiasm as homebrew clubs
from as far away as Seattle converged on the 22nd annual Heart of the Valley
Homebrew Festival. Over two hundred seventy entries kept judges busy for the
better part of the day. Denny Conn took a second with “Milo’s Alt”. Best of
show went to Paul Long for his “Ringneck I.P.A.” – reported to have a
distinctly resinous herbal hop character reminiscent of the hop plant’s
illegitimate relative. After judging there were twenty-four different
microbrews and music by Los Mex Pistols del Norte and others. Lots of prizes
were given away in the raffle and Matt Jarvis scored about half of them with a
disproportionately small number of tickets. Maybe it does make a difference if
the tickets are soaked in beer.
From the
commercial sector: Rogue’s Hazelnut Brown Nectar, the ale brewed from Chris
Studach’s award-winning recipe may soon be seen on the cooler shelves as it
once was with Chris’s portrait on the 22 oz. Bottle. Since spring of 2003 this
beer has been marketed as “Morimoto Hazelnut Ale”. One of the stars of the
FoodTV series “The Iron Chef”, Morimoto’s face on the bottle was expected to
boost sales. Whether it did or not, the decision was made to return to the
familiar old label for what we have affectionately come to know as “Bald Guy
Ale”.
Most home
brewers can get yeast from each other or from a commercial brewery when it’s
time to brew. It saves a little money and it’s usually enough to pitch without
culturing. But the yeast that’s available for free doesn’t always fit the style
you want to brew. Or you may save yeast in a jar in the fridge but can’t use it
while it’s still viable. We’ve got a solution now other than just buying
another yeast culture. Nate Sampson is setting up a yeast exchange. He has the
necessary skills and equipment to do slant cultures and is accepting donations
of healthy yeast. The slants will keep for several months and would be
available to club members. The greater the participation the greater variety of
cultures will be available. Check with Nate at the next meeting or give him a
call for details on how to participate.
Big Brew
Day was indeed big this year. Four thousand four hundred ninety one gallons of
beer were brewed at 157 different locations around the country. Thanks Denny
for hosting another successful Big Brew.
We’ll be
making beer together again at our next meeting. This time it’s smoked beers at
Kent and Janie’s, 25835 Tanya Lane in Veneta. Mash-in will be at 9 am.
Summer’s
almost here and the schedule’s filling up already. The annual camp-out (which
we missed last year because of a forest fire) will be August 13th – 15th at
Clark Creek Camp Ground. The camping fees have already been paid out of club
funds. The fire missed the campground, so we should find it just like we left
it the year before.
See you all
at the Sasquatch Brewfest, June 5th on the Broadway Mall. Cheers, RC.
