Hey All,

Here’s to an active start to the Summer season.

Congrats to all the awards won at the Heart of the Valley.

Best of Show went to Russ with his Dortmund Export, also with a 2nd place for an Imperial IPA

Denny received a 2nd place for his Poodle Pils

A 3rd place award went to Kevin McGraw for his Schwartzbier

And Ben Van Dusen took 1st in a grueling battle for the best of the “Other Meads” catagory with a Blackberry Mead.

A good job overall for the CBS brewers.

A big Thanks to Denny for hosting the AHA annual Big Brew. Another successful day with plenty of sunshine, beer, food, and brewing. See Robin’s quip for the low down.

I culture them in slants and the process to step them up into pitchable amounts of yeast is very simple. I am more than willing to help with any questions you may have on the subject. And Now a Word from President Robin Chitwood:

May 27, 2005

Many thanks to Denny Conn for hosting the annual Big Brew again this year. Six brewers produced 40 gallons of beer that day. There was certainly more than 40 gallons of homebrew on tap under the canopy and much of it was consumed. More than thirty others turned out for beer appreciation. The net gain of beer produced over beer consumed must have been a few gallons at least. There were 224 Big Brew sites registered this time. Only a portion of those sites have reported their results but the total so far has reached 6, 654 gallons. That’s 53,232 glasses of beer!

The Corvallis homebrew club, Heart of the Valley Homebrewers put on another spectacular brew fest on May 21st at the Benton County Fairgrounds. There were 305 entries in the BJCP sanctioned homebrew competition with entries in every style category. Russ Kazmierczak took best of show with his Dortmunder Export and took home the grand prize, a kegerator complete with kegs, CO2 tank and regulator, two beer faucets and a drip tray. Russ also took a second in the IPA category for his “Double Vision II” Ben VanDusen got a first prize in the “other mead” category for his blackberry mead. Denny Conn took second in the Pilsner category for his “Poodle Pils” and Keven McGraw took third in the dark lager category for his schwarzbier. I’d say that’s a pretty remarkable showing for our club.

Hop Madness is happening again this year on August 27th – 28th at the same location as last year’s event, the Brooks Tree Farm. This is a one night camp-out with lots of beer, live music, a tour of hop yards and a hop processing plant and a chance to brew with freshly picked hops. The tree farm offers a nice camping area with lush, green fairway-cut grass. The Brooks Tree Farm is just north of Salem off I-5. Here’s a chance to have some fun and meet some people from other homebrew clubs in the valley.

The next event is a club brew at my place, 2656 Potter St. on June 18th. The styles are European Amber Lager and Baltic Porter. These beers will be the subjects for the AHA club only competitions in the fall. Check with Nate Sampson for lager yeast slants. Mash-in will be at 9am. Bring beer and munchies. Please call ahead if you plan to brew. Space is limited. See you on the 18th.

. Cheers, RC
