What’s New:
Ahhh, the pub crawl. What fun,eh? We had a fantastic turn-out. We even had Winston show up at the Wild Duck. He is well on the road to recovery and looking great. Many thanks to Chip for putting that event together. Oh, and the four years of Sassy! Ooooh yeah. All the pubs gave us a warm welcome with some of the finest beer anywhere. Thanks to all.
Hope some of you have been brewing for the Charlie P. show. We should show off a little at that event. None of that southern California whiz beer stuff ;). Show Charlie what the Northwest is all about.
As of the time of this newsletter, we have not had anyone new offer to run as officers of the club. The ballot is with this newsletter so if you want to do something, write yourself in. Don’t be shy. A little effort goes a long way. It doesn’t have to be an official position, just something you want to help with. The ballot will have the names of the people who have already volunteered to be officers. Send the ballots back, or bring them to the next meeting.
The club is also starting to work on a web page. If you have something to add to it, bring it up at a planning or regular meeting. You can also e-mail information as soon as we have a web master.
Anyone interested in T-shirts? The club is a little short on funds so if you want to pre pay for one, talk to Janie.
The next meeting will be at Chris Studach’s house. This will be a technical meeting. The subject is still undecided but rest assured, this will be a great meeting. Bring your pencils and note pad. Also bring a snack and something to drink if you can.
If you want to host a regular or planning meeting, let me know. We can have the planning meetings at a pub or something but it’s always nice to have it at someone’s house. The planning meetings are smaller and not as ruckus as the regular meetings so you won’t have to arrange security ;)

From the Brew Pot:
This month’s recipe is an extract version of Newcastle Brown Ale. This northern English Brown is the standard for the style.
For 5 gallons:
Crush and steep the following grains for 20mins at 150 degrees F.
¼# 55 degree British crystal malt
¼# British chocolate malt
1/8# British black malt
Strain and add 6# Light malt extract to pot and bring volume up to 5+ gallons.
Hop additions:
1oz Target 8% for 45 mins.
½ oz. East Kent Goldings for 15 mins.
Pitch when cool with either Wyeast 1098 or 1028.
Weird Beer News:
Scientists for Health Canada suggested that, considering the results of a recent analysis that revealed the presence of female hormones in beer, men should take a second look at their beer consumption. The theory is that drinking beer makes men turn into women.
To test the theory, 100 men were each given 8 pints of beer to be drank
within a one hour period. It was then observed that 100% of the men
gained weight, talked excessively without making sense, became overly emotional,
couldn’t drive well, failed to think rationally, argued over nothing, had
to sit down while urinating, couldn’t perform sexually and refused to apologize
when wrong.
No further testing is planned.
New Brew News?!?
There is a new bi-monthly Brewing Newspaper out called “Northwest Brewing
News”. I picked up a copy recently and expected the usually stuff-advertisements,
articles with fluff and not substance, and more advertisements. This rag
wasn’t all that bad. Don’t be Afraid of the Dark…A Guide to the Northwest’s
Finest Stouts was the debut issue and not a bad one at that. There was
great reading on the history and myths of Stouts as well as references
to many great Northwest brands and styles. They through in a decent
recipe and there were sections on all the local cities and there pubs.
Eugene’s section of brew pubs was pretty small though. The paper
was not bad for a free-bee.
Beer Poetry:
Beer, have sex, and compost
If I were a beer
In your glass to be near
In you I’d soon be
Until you went pee
I sure hope you’d compost me
