October 2002
Next Meetings:
Jubelale Celebration on Saturday, October 19that Mark and Roses. . The event will be at 1232 Dalton Dr. 461-6779 and starts at 7:00PM.
Due to special request from Russ's father, a cider pressing might be held at Russ and Amber's house (439 Kourt Drive) on a date to be determined. Possibly ont the weekend of October 12th or 20th or on a weeknight. This event is not confirmed and depends on the grape harvest (yes, Russ is a bed wetter, but still prefers beer and whiskey). If the pressing is held on a weekend it will start at 11:00 AM or 5:00 PM on a weeknight. Please check the web site or call 461-1548 for updates and more information. Rumor has it some great ciders were produced from last years pressing.
The Oktoberfest celebration is scheduled for October 26th at 7PM at Christine Jump’s, 535 Mallard in Springfield.
And Now a Word from President Robin Chitwood:
Twenty-seven miles of farmland and hop yards rolled by fairly
quickly for the few who turned out for the hop ride north of Salem. The
weather was mild and the air was full of the scent of fresh hops. Our sag
wagon driver Rod Surcamp scouted out a hop processing operation and arranged
for us to take a guided tour. Inside the big wood framed building was a
fascinating assemblage of clunking chains, whirring belts and old wooden
cat walks. The cut hop vines traveled through the circuit of machinery,
producing piles of cones to be spread three feet deep in the big diesel
fired drying room in the adjacent building. This plant dries hops in about
nine hours.
We returned to our starting point in the park to find Matt Jarvis
already set up and brewing beer at the Hop Fest. This celebration marked
the twentieth anniversary of Fresh Hops of Philomath. It featured local
bands and a brew-in with piles of fresh hops. Home brewers got a chance
to brew with hops straight from the field.
The best chili in town was at Mark and Rose Smith’s last weekend.
After considerable deliberation an astute panel of culinary judges pronounced
John Wilson Champion of Chili. Thanks Mark and Rose for another great cook
off and we’ll be looking forward to your Jubelale celebration on October
19th.
The Oktoberfest celebration is scheduled for October 26th at
7PM at Christine Jump’s, 535 Mallard in Springfield. Christine would like
the party to be as much as possible like they have been. Wear a costume,
bring beer and make a spectacle of yourself. I have personally seen the
keg of Glen’s Russian Imperial Stout, which is to be served that night.
A couple of ideas for weekend retreats have been circulating.
One is for a weekend at McMenamin’s Edgefield. The other: a weekend at
Pelican Brewpub in Pacific city. Anyone interested give me a call or bring
it up at the next meeting.
It’s time again to be thinking about electing officers for next
year. Elections will be held in January. If you’re interested in running
for office or want to nominate someone contact any of the current officers.
