And Now a Word from President Robin Chitwood:

September 12, 2004

What if we had a tech meeting and nobody came? That was almost the case at john Wilson’s house on Saturday the 11th. Maybe it was the soft drizzle coming down that morning or the Ducks game later that day, but the only one brewing was John. His old pink Rambler sat in the carport, ready to launch if the space was needed for brewing. Next to it, suspended from roof beams was the giant two-man walking baguette, looking like a brown paper kayak. (Look for it at the Eugene Celebration). John didn’t move anything out of the way or set anything up because he had a hunch there wouldn’t be much of a turnout. Nobody had called to ask directions. So it was a pretty quiet day there until Kent MacDonald showed up with an extra ticket to the Ducks game. Some days just take their own direction.

Many thanks to the folks at Brooks Tree Farm for hosting Hop Madness this year. That beautiful big field of green fairway cut grass was the perfect place to pitch tents. And we’ve been invited to come back next year. The attendance was less than half what we expected, possibly due to uncertainty earlier in the year about whether it would happen at all. The “Best Damn Hoppy Beer” award went to Rob Hudson and the “People’s Choice” award went to Denny Conn for his rye IPA. Despite the small turnout there were several people brewing that day with freshly picked hops provided by Dave Wills of Fresh Hops. Thanks to Dan Shultz for pulling this together despite a two-week trip to California and getting his kids ready to start school.

Another summer has blown by and the agenda for October calls for two parties to brace us for the cooler weather. Saturday the 23rd id Jubelale night at Mark and Rose Smith’s where each year we stand under the ancient oak to imbibe the first of the winter beers. A week later Christine Jump hosts the annual Oktoberfest party where traditional Bavarian beer and food is consumed by Halloween spooks and hobgoblins. See you there. RC.

News You Can Use Department:

The Rogue is coming! The Rogue is coming!

Yep, the rumors are true – Rogue is opening a full brewpub in the old West Bros. building, and they are going to brewing and doing the whole Rogue Nation thing at full tilt. This is gonna be good…. Our own Christine Jump is going to be the manager (talk about putting the fox in charge of the henhouse.…) so wish her well when you see her next. Get in touch with her if you are looking for a short term (10 days) cleaning/helper gig.  [mj]
