The Prez’ Sez’:

Chili, chili, chili!  Fire up those chili pots and get ready for the annual CBS Chili Cook-Off.  If this cook-off is anything like the last one there will be a hot pepper shortage in the area.  Bring it sweet and bring it hot; just bring it on.  The Chili Cook-Off will be hosted by Mark and Rose Smith again.  We had over 14 entries last year and we could do even better this year.  Bring friends and family because we will need judges.  I have been working on getting information on how to better judge such an event.  Seems there is no formal points system that I can find.  If anyone has any information on that let me know.

The hop ride went well.  Many club members came to pedal their way through the hop fields.  I had family in town that weekend so I couldn’t make the ride.  From all accounts the Ram Pub will never be the same.  They couldn’t decide whether to ask the club to never come back again, or never go away.  Hopefully someone will write a column and tell us all about it.

We still need some help on one or two meetings for October and November.  I know we have the Octoberfest at Glen’s house, and Rose and I will be hosting our annual bash the week before, but I would like to have a weeknight meeting sometime that month.  Dave Andrews of Spencers has offered to host a meeting to show off the brewery and new menu.  Sounds like fun to me.  Any other ideas?

The November meeting should have a theme to go along with “Teach A Friend to Brew Month.”  We could have a few people bring their setups and do a club brew.  Jim Stockton has offered to donate the ingredients and the location if we want to do it in the parking lot.  If someone can arrange to make sure it doesn’t rain that would help.

How About This Capper:

I just got a homebrew catalog with the ultimate in homebrewer’s capper. After connecting to an 85 psi compressor and you’re ready to go for high speed cappin’.  Dual piston controls prevent hands from getting in the way and a safety shield helps keep the operator dry.  This deluxe capper, which can be converted to cork Champagne bottles, is just $499.90 for Williams Brewing.  Wow talk about high end toys!!

Club Challenge:

Our club has had several competitions, from beer belly to BBQ sauce, but not a homebrew competition.  Thus I throw down the gauntlet of challenge, to all those who choose to brew. A simple test, and it doesn’t matter if you’re all grain or extract. Brown Ale, any sub flavor you choose, in a couple of months we can judge them at a meeting and learn from the experience.  I’ll bring this up for business at the upcoming meeting.

Some Headline News: !!!

Congratulations to Chip and Chris on their wedding.  I understand it was a beautiful ceremony.  I was out of town that week and couldn’t make it

Denny Conn took a 1st in pale ales with his Rye IPA,  2nd in amber & brown for his Dusseldorf Alt, and 3rd in strong beers for his Belgian strong ale, as well as best label

State Fair Results:

As usual, Mark Norbury won Best of Show at the Oregon State Fair this year.  His European Light Lager is always a classic example.  Too bad Mark’s in the Salem Club. Hey go Mark.
