Last Meeting: (by Matt Jarvis)

Many thanks to Robin and Karen for hosting our Tech meeting and Smoked Beer competition. There were multitudes of plentiful and yummy culinary delights to sample as we mixed and mingled, waiting for the judging to be completed. Thanks to Russ, Nate and Ben for stepping up and tackling a difficult ‘style’, being Smoked Beers. Yours truly was fortunate enough to win despite stiff competition from Robin, Julius and Brandt. Sorry guys, but “Size Matters” – especially when it comes to bribes….

Thanks to Nate for giving a well received presentation on advanced yeast culturing and the usage of slants. He also said our yeast bank which he manages is getting nice and large, so keep your eyes on the club web site (www.hbd.org/cascade) for the list.

Next Meeting:

Saturday, Sept 11th 9am.  John & Kelly Wilson’s house at 1960 Washington Street. IPA brewing session. Bring your gear and join the fun!

Upcoming Events:

Labor Day Weekend – HOP MADNESS LIVES! Here’s the scoop: This year''s event will be held at Ryan LeCompte's (an OBC member) Brook's Tree Farm outside of Salem and very close to last year's site (we are persona non grate at Willamette Mission State Park after last year's problems). Ryan has about 2 acres of nice , well cut grass field where we can camp. We will be short on shade but won't have park rangers cruising the grounds either.

The dates are September 4 & 5 from noon to noon. Check out the Hop Madness

web site for maps, etc.  www.hopmadness.com.

And Now a Word from President Robin Chitwood:

August 23, 2004

The light of the campfire has by now traveled beyond the most distant planet in the solar system. The homebrew we drank will make its way to the Pacific Ocean. Beer Camp 2004 was about friends, good homebrewed beer and good food. Thanks to all those folks who helped organize and who donated food, beer and tended the barbeques. Special thanks to Chuck Link who procured  the huge inventory of products for the raffle. The proceeds from the raffle more than paid the clubs expenses for the weekend. Thanks also to all those remarkably untalented performers in the “Untalent Show”. Don’t give up your day jobs. Kristina has already reserved the campground for next year. We will develop our own set of directions to the campsite for next year. The directions from the park website even confused some of the locals in Lowell.

There were fewer entries in the Lane county fair homebrew competition than last year. This has always been an event for beginning home brewers and others who don’t belong to a club and want critical feedback on their skills. I would encourage CBS members to enter their beers in this contest in order to maintain the quality of the competition. Thanks to Denny Conn, this is the first year this event has been BJCP sanctioned. This makes it a very good opportunity for both judges and contestants.

The Newport Microbrew Festival is featuring a homebrew competition. The dates of the festival are October 8th & 9th. The deadline for entries is September 17th. There are no drop-off sites in Eugene so you will have to take your entries there or send them.

Hop Madness is really happening again this year on the 4th and 5th of September at the Brooks Tree Farm north of Salem. This is a good opportunity to meet other home brewers from around the Portland area. There will be outdoor brewing with fresh hops, BBQ dinner and a pancake breakfast. Check out the website at:  http://www.hopmadness.com/

We’d like to hear some new voices in the newsletter. If you have brewing news, an interesting story, brewing tips, jokes or gossip lets hear from you. Send your article to Matt Jarvis by the third Sunday of the month.

The next meeting will be hosted by John and Kelly Wilson’s, 1960 Washington, on September 11th at 9am. It’s an IPA brew session. Bring your brew gear or just hang out and see how great beer is made. See you there. Cheers, RC.
