Garage Crawl

The club is working on putting together a Garage Crawl.  You are probably wondering what the hell is a Garage Crawl, well it will be just like a pub crawl, but instead of pubs and breweries we will be going to our club members garages for beer.  The idea originated last winter after a small group of us did a pub crawl in Portland with former member Todd Steele.  He mentioned that he rather go around to some of our garages and taste beer then go to pubs and that point some said "yeah, let's do a garage crawl" and at that point an idea was born.

We are thinking about Saturday November 5th, starting in the morning, so someone please brew a coffee beer for our first stop.  In order to make this event successful, we will need some of our members, that brew and have beer on tap, to volunteer as hosts.  If you are interested in hosting, please send me (Russ) an email, or phone call, 461-1548, so I can compile a list and develop itinerary.

Kevin has been contacted and has agreed to do the driving. So there will be a limit to the amount of people that can board the bus. There will be a $10 deposit to help pay for the bus ride. Also we will limit the first round of interested parties to club members only. If there is room left after everyone that wants to go we will open it up to non-club members/guests.

There will be other email updates as more info becomes available.

And Now a Word from President Robin Chitwood:

September 28, 2005

John and Kelly Wilson’s kitchen was a tortilla factory on September 10th. Despite a room full of hungry, beer drinking on-lookers and many distractions John kept cranking out the hot homemade corn cakes. Instantly they became tostadas and were washed down with good home brew. Thanks to John and Kelly for hosting a most convivial gathering.

Bavarian beer hall music, hop bines draped around doorways and an abundance of Bavarian style food and beer all contributed to an absolutely unequalled Oktoberfest party at Russ and Amber’s house on the 24th. Even two disappointing ball games failed to dampen high spirits. Many thanks to Russ and Amber for putting together an outstanding event.

Congratulations to Liz Laughlin on her new position with Rock Bottom Brewery. Liz will train in Portland for a head brewer’s position at another Rock Bottom Brewery. Our condolences to Jamie Floyd. “That’s the third person I’ve lost to Rock Bottom,” said Jamie.

CBS member Greg Bolt has finally got his new brew system up and running and has successfully brewed his first two all-grain beers on it. It is a Pico-style three burner single level set up on a welded steel stand. The kettle, mash tun and hot liquor tank are all converted Sanke kegs. It features a single magnetic drive pump and a convoluted copper counterflow chiller. Greg is getting up to speed pretty fast with all-grain brewing so we can expect some tasty beer at Greg’s house soon.

The Halloween party at Scott and Tina Ellison’s on October 29th. Bring beer and a dish to share. The address is 589 Brookdale Ave. in Springfield and it starts at 7pm. Costumes are encouraged but not required so if you look scary enough already, come as you are.

Cheers, RC

For all those that brew, I still have a large number of yeast slants to pick from. This hasn’t really been put to use, and I can only brew so much at a time. If you are at all interested in getting a slant, let me know. I’m also more than happy to answer any questions about stepping up a slant to a pitchable amount of yeast. It’s not that hard, really.

Please feel free to call or email me if you are in need of a yeast slant. I culture them in slants and the process to step them up into pitchable amounts of yeast is very simple. I am more than willing to help with any questions you may have on the subject. Hm: 688-8979 email: insubordin8n@gmail.com
