And Now a Word from President Robin Chitwood:

November 29, 2005

More than forty different homebrewed beers were available for sampling during our eight or nine hour garage crawl on November 5th. Participating hosts were Chris Studach, Greg Bolt, Les Johnson, Nate Sampson, Rod Surcamp and myself. Most of the beers were above the 1.050 original gravity range, bottled barley wines and mead being the strongest beverages on offer. Of those I spoke with after the event, reactions ranged from wild enthusiasm to complaints of moderate memory loss. It was certainly a great way to see and taste the variety of beers each brewer makes and check out some cool brewing and dispensing equipment. Thanks to all those who provided beer stops and special thanks to event planner Russ Kazmierczak.

A scheduling clash actually gave us a choice of two different events on November 5th. The AHA Teach a Friend to Brew Day has been a tradition at Denny Conn’s house for years, but this time it happened on the same day as the garage crawl. Denny brewed an all Columbus hop IPA for the affair, which was attended by Matt Jarvis and his friends Jason and Laine. First wort hopping was the featured technique. There was a vertical tasting of Denny’s “Old Stoner Barley Wine” to commemorate the event. Denny has been nominated to the American Homebrewers Association board of directors. If you are a member and want to vote in the election you can do so on-line at the AHA website.

Cocinero Mark Smith took first prize in the chili cook-off on November 12th with his “Naked Chick Chili”. I don’t know why some guys associate food with naked women. It’s about time he won one of these though, after hosting the event for so many years. This time it was a people’s choice selection so they could get the judging over with and get down to the serious eating. Second place went to Tom and Teri Fries for their “Cheshire Red” and John Wilson took third with “Billy Chili”. Mark said the milder chili was more popular this year. Mark will have the right to display the “Grand COC” trophy a year and first prize was a deluxe crock-pot. Second prize was a spice rack and third prize was a selection of ground chili pepper. Thanks Mark and Rose for hosting this ever-popular event.

Have a happy holiday season. Drive safely. Drink responsibly and I’ll see you at the Christmas party on the 17th. RC

For all those that brew, I still have a large number of yeast slants to pick from. This hasn’t really been put to use, and I can only brew so much at a time. If you are at all interested in getting a slant, let me know. I’m also more than happy to answer any questions about stepping up a slant to a pitchable amount of yeast. It’s not that hard, really.

Please feel free to call or email me if you are in need of a yeast slant. I culture them in slants and the process to step them up into pitchable amounts of yeast is very simple. I am more than willing to help with any questions you may have on the subject. Hm: 688-8979 email: insubordin8n@gmail.com
